If you follow me on Instagram (which you totally should – find me here), then you have seen many photos and videos of my 75 pound Siberian Husky, Hezekiah.
Hezekiah is almost nine years old and he has been with my husband even longer than I have! He is THE sweetest dog I know and since I became a part of this family three years ago I have made it my mission to spoil him in any way I can.
Since Hezekiah has been a part of the family for longer than I have, I felt a little nervous becoming a dog-mom when I married David. Honestly? I’m more of a cat person. And I always wondered if I would ever be able to have that man’s-best-friend kind of bond with Hezekiah. He and David are inseparable and I didn’t want him to think of me as competition, but rather a loving member of his pack. Since I’m naturally hospitable and nurturing and I love to feed the ones I love…I figured snack time would be the best way to build this friendship. So, I started feeding him treats, or “cookies” as I call them, twice a day. This became OUR time. It helped him learn to trust me and be obedient to me, but it also helped me enjoy the fun of play-time and seeing him get that puppy-like excitement when I went to the pantry for his “cookie.”
I searched for months for a treat I could feel good about giving him that wouldn’t make a huge impact on our grocery bill each week. I wanted something that was full of GOOD things for his health without all the added stuff that he shouldn’t be eating at all. I’m not sure how he compares to other huskies, but Hezekiah has a super sensitive stomach and I didn’t want to make that worse by giving him just anything off the shelf. On one particular trip to the store I found Vita Bone ® Artisan Inspired ® biscuits and decided to give them a try.
He LOVED them to say the least and I loved that they were made with real meat, fruit, and veggies. I’m pretty certain the BBQ Chicken & Sweet Potato biscuits are what finally convinced him to officially welcome me into the family — I think he was a little reluctant to share me with David for a while. But, now he and I are absolute besties and when I say the word cookie he immediately runs to the pantry door.
I’ve been giving Hezekiah the Vita Bone Artisan Inspired biscuits for a long time now…but…I broke down one shopping trip and grabbed the cheapest box of biscuits I could find just to see if it made a difference. I mean…does a dog really care that much what you feed him? Apparently he does because I still have those biscuits at the back of my pantry. They just don’t appeal to him the same way. These random $1 biscuits also made me notice something I never had before about the Vita Bone Artisan Inspired biscuits: they don’t smell like dog biscuits! No, really. If you have a dog then you know the very distinctive smell of a newly opened box of biscuits and it is NOT pleasant. So I realized why Hezekiah wasn’t as drawn to the generic treats…they don’t smell good! I hadn’t realized how much I despised that smell until I noticed that Vita Bone biscuits don’t have it! If I’m being quite honest…they smell appetizing! Don’t worry I didn’t taste one for myself — but they smell like something I would actually COOK.
Because I loved how much he loved these treats I was super excited to let him try the newly released Soft Treats from Vita Bone. He, of course, loves them. They have a real turkey pot roast (or country biscuits and gravy!) aroma and the softness is a nice a plus because as Hezekiah ages he struggles to chew anything overly hard. They have become his new favorite and whenever I open the pantry he comes running. So, the good news is that I have finally found the PERFECT treat that meets my standards as a dog-mom and his standards as a picky fur-baby. The bad news?? He is pretty much addicted to these things and I have very little will power when it comes to telling him no.
The best part of all of this is that snack time is for US. It’s the one part of the day that is strictly for he and I. I love that we have developed this trusting bond and since then he has been more cuddly with me, more obedient, and more protective. David gets to be the fun, playful, energetic dog-dad and I thrive by being the nurturing, loving dog-mom. It’s the perfect balance I always wanted when I realized I would be getting more than a husband on my wedding day.
If you’re looking for the perfect treat (that is family-owned and American-made) that you can feel good about, then you have to let your pup try Vita Bone Artisan Inspired biscuits. They are full of all the good things, none of the bad things, and smell nothing like generic dog biscuits! I will truly never give Hezekiah any other treats — and I don’t think he would take them even if I did! Speaking of…I have a generic box of treats in the back of my pantry I’m never going to use if anyone wants them! My fur-baby only deserves the best and I don’t have any plans of letting him down any time soon.
